Brothers Dallas, left, and Dylan Bergstrom are being groomed to one day take over running Bashaw Concrete, which was founded in 1963 by their grandfather Mel Hay and today services customers from around Central Alberta and beyond.

It’s the middle of winter in Central Alberta, but whether you’re a farmer, a contractor or a homeowner, you’re likely already thinking about future projects, many of which will require concrete.

If you’re preparing to construct a concrete building, want to create a new silage pit, build a retaining wall or are shopping for a concrete planter, working with people who have years of expertise in those areas makes sense, suggests Yvonne King with Bashaw Concrete Products. Her late father, company founder Mel Hay, was a pioneer in the industry in Alberta and a community leader who passed along his broad knowledge on a daily basis.

“Many of our staff have been with us 10, 15 and some, 20-plus years or more,” Yvonne says. “They were trained by Dad and now they’re helping train the next generation in our family help serve you in a way he would be proud of. How many businesses are blessed with that?”

Your project is their priority

Whether you’re looking at ordering ready mix, precast products or block forms, or want to install a new septic tank, you can rest assured that the people who run this 56-year-old company today are keeping alive and well the founder’s commitment to helping make your project successful.

Mel’s daughters Dorene Hay, a veteran trucker who grew up in the business and manages the day-to-day operations, and office manager Yvonne, along with her husband, Ron King, oversee the firm. Helping farmers, contractors and other clients find creative solutions to daily building and infrastructure challenges, they and their staff are carrying on Mel’s reputation for going the extra mile – “no job is too big, too small or too far.”

Tight-knit family firm also planning for future

Dorene’s sons, Dylan and Dallas Bergstrom, are learning the ropes from Ron, Carl, Norm and other veteran staffers, to be able to assume leadership roles with the company in the future. Dylan, who Yvonne calls a “no-nonsense, get it done kind of guy, like his grandfather,” is a heavy duty mechanic who oversees maintenance of the truck fleet. Dallas, who has a civil engineering technology degree from SAIT, is using his knowledge working with clients in the precast and septic tank areas of the company.

They are growing in all aspects of the business and both look forward to helping you with your concrete projects, no matter what the challenges.

“Dad was really known as the Idea Man in the Alberta ready mix industry,” Yvonne says of Mel’s inventive spirit. “His passion was always to do things that people said you couldn’t do. He was always willing to take on a challenge and the boys have that same spirit.”
