City of Lacombe staff have come up with a fun way for local residents to mark Earth Hour which runs the evening of March 24th from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Folks are invited to drop by Cranna Lake for an outdoor scavenger hunt and prizes, said Sonya Beauclair, an administrative assistant in the City’s Recreation and Culture department.

Those interested in participating are asked to pre-register and get a prize at lacombe.ca/choosewell and meet at the Cranna Lake trail head parking lot at 8:15 p.m.

There will be coffee and hot chocolate to enjoy, and the event will run weather permitting.

“We thought it would be fun for families to come out and do a walk around Cranna Lake and do the scavenger hunt,” explained Beauclair, who is working on a list of items that will work whether is a snowy evening or decidedly spring-like.

Little flashlights will be handed out to help folks during the trek as well.

“Earth Hour is about creating awareness on climate change; to become more aware about the impact we are having on the environment,” she added.

Starting as a symbolic ‘lights out’ event in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour is now the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment, inspiring millions of people to take action for the planet and nature.

Last year, WWF’s Earth Hour rolled across the world once again, from New York to New Zealand, Paris to Paraguay, and millions joined forces to shine a light on climate change, noted the web site earthhour.org.

“An unprecedented 187 countries and territories took part, over 3,000 landmarks switched off their lights and millions of individuals, businesses and organizations across seven continents stepped forward to change climate change.”

Here at home, at 9:30 p.m. the prizes will be handed down at Cranna Lake.

“I’m excited - this year I really wanted to try and get more people involved,” she said. “I was trying to make it a more family-oriented activity this year and get more people out.

“We’ve been really trying to grow it over the past five years, too.”

Candlelight yoga events have been held; fitness walks and drum circles have also been featured activities as well.

“The scavenger hunt will hopefully target more of the families.”

Plus, it’s a great chance for families to get more active together, too, she added.

That whole emphasis on a more active lifestyle falls in line with the City’s ‘Find the Right Fit’ program.

According to the City’s web site, Find the Right Fit is a program that allows you to try a variety of health and wellness activities available in Lacombe at no cost.

“We know that everyone’s needs are different and this program will allow you to explore options and find your right fit!”

Folks are encouraged to register online to receive their coupon booklet that gives them access to the various opportunities.

From there, they can submit those coupons at the facilities as they use them and be entered into monthly prize draws.

Participating facilities run the gamut from CrossFit Lacombe, Finding Balance, Pound Fitness, Kinsmen Aquatic Centre, Burman University Gym, STRONG and Booster Juice to the County of Lacombe Lifelong Learning Association, the Mary C. Moore Public Library, Music in the Park, Backyard Friends Community Dinner, de.light.ful Steam and Spa and the Primary Care Network.

“This year, we’ve settled on a coupon book. They register and they get these coupon books that have all of the activities that they can do. They take them to the facility. We’ve also expanded this year, and included mental health and subjects like ‘eating healthy’ too. It’s also an ongoing program.”

Find the Right Fit, like the Earth Hour event, fall under the umbrella of ChooseWell - an energizing, healthy eating and active living initiative supported by Alberta Health and Wellness and managed by the Alberta Recreation and Parks Association.
