Winter scenes slammed into Central Alberta with local residents waking up to blustery winds and snowy roadways.

According the The Weather Network, “a low pressure system is bringing snow to portions of the province today.

“Snowfall totals for parts of southeastern Alberta will exceed 20 cm by this evening with the highest amounts expected near the Cypress Hills. Snowfall amounts near Calgary will be closer to 10 cm.

“Strong winds of 60 gusting to 90 km/h have also developed this morning with this system,” the release noted.

“These strong winds will combine with the falling snow to reduce visibilities in blowing snow in some areas. The strongest winds are expected to subside on this afternoon.

Snow will taper off this afternoon through Drumheller, Calgary and Coronation and this night through the far south.

Meanwhile, officials also warn that surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.

“Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Poor weather conditions may contribute to transportation delays.”

But take heart - things are set to improve over the coming days. Sunshine and temperatures in the 15 C range are expected by Thursday.
