The Lacombe and District Chamber of Commerce has a new face at the organization’s helm.

Wendy Buyar officially landed the role of executive director earlier this month after serving as interim executive director since February.

“I’m super excited, and I’m a bit nervous because I have lots to do, and I want to make sure that I’m living up to everyone’s expectations,” she said.

“But I’m very excited to be a part of this organization. I think it’s a great organization, and that it has lots to do in the community. I also like connecting businesses with the community and one another.”

Buyar has plenty of community experience, including that of organizing the Community Market in Lacombe for several years.

In other chamber news, the organization is also now accepting applications for its annual scholarship program.

The annual award is given to a local graduating high school student enrolling in a post-secondary program.

”This year we will award two scholarships for $1,250 to two successful applicants from high schools within the County of Lacombe,” said Buyar.

“It’s usually only one, but we had some nice donations at the entrance to the recent Spring Trade Show and Sale. We collect one dollar from each person, and we had so many more dollars coming in up at the front, it was possible to offer two scholarships.

“We are very excited about that.”

The scholarship committee will select the recipients based on certain criteria, and their written submissions.

Potential recipients must be a Grade 12 student to a school within Lacombe or Lacombe County, such as Ecole Secondaire Lacombe Composite High School, the Lacombe Outreach School, Alix MAC School, Eckville Junior Senior High School, Bentley School, or the Parkview Adventist Academy.

They must also be a resident of Lacombe or Lacombe County, and must be enrolled in a post-secondary institute for the upcoming school year (a letter of acceptance will be required).

Students also have to be employed by or be the child of an employee of a Lacombe and District Chamber of Commerce member in good standing.

The application deadline for this school year is June 7th and scholarship winners will be announced on or before June 28th.
