After a years worth of preparation, Central Alberta High School (CACHS) will host the 1A Alberta Provincial Basketball Championships starting March 14th.

“This has been a huge school effort to host provincials. It is already a year ago that they put their bid in and now its come through, which is quite exciting,” CACHS Teacher and organizer Kyle Van Stryland said.

The games will be played at CACHS, Lacombe Composite High School and Lacombe Christian School, with both and girls basketball action happening over the course of three days.

“It will be a busy few days, but it will be a lot of fun,” Van Stryland said.

The tournament will be hosted by the boys and girls CACHS Knights, who both earned their way into the tournament despite receiving automatic berths

“A lot of our students recognized they’d be in, they still wanted to earn their way in and they did do that,” Van Stryland said.

Provincials have been the culmination of work by several committees, involving several people connected to CACHS, all culminating with a weekend of upper-level basketball

“The quality of coaching within our teams is very high and there has been a lot of preparation to be good competition at Provincials. It is looking like there will be some great games,” Van Stryland said.

CACHS will be up against stiff competition including Number 1 seeds Airdrie Koinonia Christian School on the boys side and on the girls side Stirling School.

“The girls are kicking off the 1st game here at CACHS at 11 p.m. Thursday after the opening ceremonies and the boys play the second game of the day at 12:45 p.m.,” Van Stryland said.

He said it is the, “Hope and Plan” for both teams to make the finals on Saturday.

“I think people should come out and support the athletes because they have put in a lot of hard work and dedication at all of the schools,” Van Stryland said. “They are dedicated to team work and to healthy competition and that has been good throughout the season.

“It would be great to support the achievement of making it to Provincials.”

He added, “The level of play will be very high and there will be some amazing games this weekend.”
