D&M Concrete Products is no stranger to being recognized at the Lacombe and District Chamber of Commerce Business and Community Awards Gala, after being recognized several times since the business began in 1979.
This year, they have been nominated for Large Business of the Year.
President Gregg Lunn and his brother Vice President Jason Lunn, who bought into the company in 1994 after it was previously run by their father, said it is an honour to be recognized by their peers in Lacombe.
“Jason and I both worked at the company through our high school years right through until graduation,” Gregg said. We stayed on. I went on and got my welding ticket and in 1994 we had the opportunity to buy in as a partner with our dad. The rest is history,” Gregg said.
Jason said the business always strive to be very community minded, especially given the fact they were both born and raised in Lacombe. This has led the Lunns being particular active in the community including service groups and minor sports.
“There is a lot of groups we belonged to,” Gregg said. “Growing up, we played hockey, football and all of the different sports. After we married, we had two girls — so we have spent a lot of time at the rink with ringette coaching, reffing and I still play hockey.
“I have been here all my life and I don’t have any plans on leaving. Lacombe is a great community to be living and working in.”
Jason said being able to give — especially when you have kids active in the community — is easy.
“You get involved with whatever they are doing — so football, ringette, dance and all of that. If you can give extra to help them out, that is what you are there for,” he said.
Being an active member of the business community, including with the chamber, is important to the Lunns.
“You get to talk to fellow business owners in Lacombe and being in a small community you are almost daily or weekly at their business or your seeing them at something you are volunteering at,” Gregg said.
“With Lacombe being a tight knit community, it is fun to do business in town.”
Jason added the connection has allowed them to expand their business.
“It helps diversify to a lot of industries, whether that is agricultural, oilfield or landscaping — it is nice to be part of great community,” he said.
Gregg said they were surprised to see they were up against, including Cilantro and Chive and Nowco Home Hardware.
“My first reaction was that it is a tough crowd to be part of. All of those business are very well-deserving. We have worked directly with all of them and we wish them all the best,” Gregg said.
Jason added that they are thankful to whoever in the community chose to nominate D&M Concrete Products.
