Lacombe is following the lead of other communities with the creation of Give, Share, Care Lacombe.
Similar to groups like 100 Women who Care in Red Deer — Give, Share Care Lacombe invites at least 100 women to donate $100 towards a charity four times per year.
“Every member is able nominate a different local charity, non-profit group, family or individual that is in need,” Organizer Dawn Parent said. “The night of the meeting, we put them all in a box and we draw out three names.
“Whatever one gets drawn, people come and speak about them and then we vote. Whoever is drawn gets the money from that night.”
The group had their first meeting on Nov. 28th, where 47 members attended — raising $4,700 for Stepping Stones in Lacombe. Stepping Stones is a branch of Youth Unlimited that helps new and expecting mothers through their pregnancy and child berth.
“It is a program that works with young pregnant women and new moms,” Parent said. “They are usually single moms, but don’t necessarily have to be. They provide counselling, help with clothing and furniture and they do a lot of work before and after birth.”
Parent said Give, Share Care Lacombe is a program she has wanted to create in the community for a long time.
“Red Deer has 100 Women who Care and 100 Men who Care, so the reason we changed the name is so that it would allow to do individuals and families,” she said. “Those other groups don’t include individuals and families in their nomination process. We want to be able to help any individual or family that may need it for any different reasons.
“I feel Lacombe is big enough that we should be able to get 100 people out to raise this money four times per year.”
Parent was encouraged by getting 47 women out to their first meeting and hopes that number will continue to grow.
“We would love to get more than that. It is an open group and anyone can join. It is not a closed group by any means. I thought it was pretty good for our first one and I am hoping that when people see what we can actually do in an hour, the will come out,” she said.

“It is a great cause and it is a great way to give back to your community,” Parent said.
