Clad in custom fitted corsets of various styles and makes, 26 models hit the runway at The Art of the Corset Arts Benefit and Fashion show last Friday at the Lacombe Memorial Centre.
The corsets, provided by Levanah’s Workshop out of Edmonton, were a part of the benefit that also included an art gallery with pieces available for purchase.
The show also had live music from local musicians, as well as a mix and mingle that gave patrons the opportunity to sample gourmet hors d’oeuvres and purchase wine by the glass.
“For me, corsets are works of art,” said Maureen MacKenzie, event organizer and master of ceremonies for the evening.
“They are simply stunning and well made and each one is individually tailored.”
The benefit and fashion show, organized by the City of Lacombe, were part of an annual event to raise awareness and funds for the Lacombe Arts Endowment fund, in which they hope to raise $1 million for.
The City explains that the proceeds from the fund are used for grants in the arts to further the education and experiences for emerging and established artists in visual, performing and literal arts.
The fund has already allowed for two $250 awards given to local student exhibitors and as of 2008 a $1,200 grant to support the artistic development of individual artists whose primary residence is located in Lacombe.
“We wanted people to realize that art is more than painting and sculptures,” said Mackenzie on why they chose the corset show.
“We wanted to show that women could be strong, stunning, beautiful, and empowered while wearing well-made clothing.”
While nothing has been set in stone for next year’s event, MacKenzie stated that there are many ideas floating around to continue to raise awareness for the endowment fund and to top this year’s success.
