One of Lacombe’s newest summer charities — Chairs for Charities — is back for its second year.
The event, which encourages businesses to build children-sized Adirondack chairs which are then raffled off for charity, has expanded this year to include businesses outside of downtown Lacombe.
Deanna Nowochin, office manager at Nowco Home Hardware, said that numbers are up from the change.
“This is our second year running the event and last year we had 46 people participate — this year we have 75 chairs,” she said.
Those 75 chairs will each be raffled off in order to raise $10,000 for Lacombe Minor Football and the Terrace Ridge School Breakfast program.
The idea originally came from a Home Hardware in Ontario that held a silent auction for adult-sized Adirondack chairs.
“We thought we would put our own twist on it with kids chairs and have it run during Lacombe Days,” Nowochin said.
To accommodate the over 2,000 raffle tickets being sold, the event has been extended from just Lacombe Days to being from July 19th to the 31st.
Nowochin said the event is a way to raise money and also builds a sense of community among businesses in Lacombe.
Our downtown core has been so engaged with each other business-wise over the last couple years. I personally spoke to every business to get them to join us — I have put my heart and soul into this,” Nowochin said.
The response was 75 unique chairs that oozed creativity.
“Everyone was given the exact same kit to start with and we ended up not having one single duplicate. Isn’t that amazing?’,” Nowochin asked.
