The Lacombe Memorial Centre (LMC) is getting a new public art installation for the Servus Credit Union boardroom.

The Lacombe Public Arts Committee (LPAC) chose a large art quilt as their installation to help with the sound echo in the room.

LPAC contracted Coreen Zerr, an art quilter from Nanaimo British Columbia. She was selected from a number of quilters from across Canada.

“She was chosen on the basis of her artistic capabilities and her fabulous use of fabric and stitchery. We sent her some photographs of different areas of Lacombe and she is going to build a landscape for us of Cranna Lake with a sunset, which is very very cool,” said LPAC member Maureen MacKenzie with the City of Lacombe.

Mackenize says art quilts are different from regular quilts.

“Art quilts are like painting with fiber and thread to create a landscape image. It takes a lot of skill and ability, then a lot of what’s called free motion stitching. So, that’s where it’s like you’re using your sewing machine to paint with thread. It’s very intricate and very effective,” said Mackenize.

She says the whole process gives the piece a lot of texture.

“It’s going be fabulous. She’s an amazing quilter.”

Mackenize says the reason LPAC is choosing quilt art is because there is a large bare wall in the boardroom that echoes and the thicker fabric will help to muffle the sound.

“Hopefully … in meetings it will be easier to hear,” said Mackenize.

“It’s functional, too.”

She says that Zerr will start working on the installation art piece in September.
