September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when Parkland Regional Libraries join with the American Library Association to make sure that every student has the most important school supply of all – a library card.

Students throughout the region can turn to their public library for homework help, reading support, and programs that include science, technology, engineering, and arts.

Libraries play an important role in the education and development of children. Studies show children who read (or are read to) at home and who use the library perform better in school, making a library card one of the most cost effective back-to-school supplies.

Today’s libraries aren’t only a place for study. They are creative and engaging community centers where people can try out new technologies, attend programs, or share activities with friends.

“In addition to programs for children, teens, and adults, our libraries offer a wide range of physical and digital resources to cardholders including print and audio books, movies, games, newspapers and magazines, language learning tools, and research databases,” says Parkland Regional Library Director, Ron Sheppard.

Disney’s the Incredibles are honourary chairs this year, helping to promote the value of a library card and bring attention to the many ways libraries and librarians transform lives and communities.

Throughout September, libraries will be showcasing what incredible spaces and resources they are in the community with special activities, events, and promotions. For more information, visit your library in person or visit Parkland Regional Library online at www.prl.ab.ca.
