The Alberta Women's Curling Championship is fast approaching, with five qualifying teams recently announced.

The teams include Team Sturmay, which won last year, Team Skrlik, Team Plett, Team Silvernagle and Team Richards. All teams will be headed to Rimbey to compete for the title of Team Alberta.

"Everything is in place. As of yesterday (Dec. 3) we've sold over $7,000 worth of tickets to the event, our goal was to sell somewhere between $12,000 to $15,000, so we're online with that, especially with Christmas coming up. We think it's a great Christmas stocking stuffer for people who are interested in it," said Rimbey Mayor Rick Pankiw.

The event takes place Jan. 22-26 at the Rimbey Arena.

Playdowns are starting now, so they still don't know who is coming, but will know later this month, except for the final two teams, which will come in the beginning of January.

"So we're going to know more in the next couple of weeks, which is exciting for us, and I think that's going to spur some tickets sales too..." said Pankiw.

"We're starting to get really excited. We're getting close."

Entertainment is lined up with The Good The Bad and The Ugly performing Jan. 24 and the Court Jesters Dueling Pianos coming out to perform Jan. 25.

Pankiw said they have also reached what they need for volunteers, which is just shy of 200.

"We want to thank everyone immensely for stepping to the plate. It's unbelievable," he said. "Our sponsors have been amazing, the town and surrounding area has really stepped up with the sponsorship end of it."
