Members of the Lacombe Kinsmen Club are gearing up for the group's 39th annual charity auction, set to run on Feb. 5 at Track on 2.

"The Lacombe Kinsmen use the funds raised to support various community initiatives, including school bursaries, local sport groups, Santas' Anonymous and much more," said Lynn Kempt, a long-time club member.

"It's really what the Kinsmen are involved in - serving as a charity organization," he said. "All of the profits raised from our various fundraisers go to support community projects."

Bidding starts at 7 p.m. and will be facilitated by Don Montgomery Auction Services, said Kempt.

"They donate their services to the Kinsmen Club.

"Around 7 p.m. Don will get busy on the microphone, and we will start the auction on all of the items that have been donated by the various local businesses," he said. "And it's not only items - there are services (up for bidding) as well. An example would be the many restaurants here in town that contribute to it - they donate gift cards to us of varying amounts," he said, adding the public are encouraged to come out to help support the cause.

According to lacombekinsmen.ca, the club is described as a community service club dedicated to serving the needs of Lacombe and the surrounding area.

"Our members volunteer together to serve local needs by sponsoring a variety of projects such as playgrounds, athletic facilities, community groups, educational scholarships, bursaries, Santa's Anonymous, and more. We also contribute to the fantastic work being done on a national level by Kin Canada, including ongoing support for the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation."

Club meetings are held the second and fourth Friday evenings of each month from September through to June, in the basement of the Royal Canadian Legion Hall at 5138 - 49 St..

Meetings include dinner, fellowship, club business, and plenty of socializing.

Kempt noted there are special events/fundraisers throughout the year as well, including the Lacombe Kinsmen Jon Dolman Memorial Golf Classic in June, and the Diamonds in the Sky fundraiser for ladies only, which is held each October and supports STARS Air Ambulance.

"It's a well-attended function, and a pretty classy affair that we put on," he said.

Kempt, who has been a member of the Lacombe Kinsmen club for close to 50 years, added that new members are of course always welcome.

"We have several 'life' members in our club," he said, adding that the club is seeing a fair number of new members coming onboard.

Not only is it a terrific means of giving back, but it also provides a place for socialization, he said.

"i see a need for service clubs in the community," he said  "We donate to as many projects in town as we can, and some neighbouring communities as well. Our motto is, 'Serving the Community's Greatest Needs'. We try to do that as much as possible."

Looking further into 2025, Kempt noted this year marks the local club's 75th anniversary. A major event to celebrate this milestone will be held in the fall, he said.
