Blackfalds Town Council approved the 2025 capital and operating budgets, which will result in a 5 per cent property tax increase to support the community's growth and service needs.

The budget reflects the town’s commitment to delivering programs and services that meet the expectations of Blackfalds residents while balancing costs, according to a release.

Administration continues to seek efficiencies, cost savings, and new funding opportunities to manage financial pressures.

In recent years, tax increases included 4.7% in 2023 and 2.9% in 2024.

“Our council collaborated with senior staff and conducted a thorough consultation process, which clearly indicated a community desire to maintain Blackfalds’ current service levels and support our continued growth,” shared Mayor Jamie Hoover.

“In recent years, we focused on keeping tax increases below inflation. However, we recognize that a tax increase is necessary to sustain growth and address rising costs. This commitment is reflected in our balanced three-year operating budget, which includes targeted increases in critical staffing, such as emergency services.”

Director of Corporate Services Justin de Bresser unveiled the budget and attributed the increase to the ongoing impact of inflation on the town's fixed costs.

He added that due to the tax increase, “The average house valued at $350,000 will increase by $11 per month.”

de Bresser also presented the capital budget, which includes the approval of key infrastructure projects.

“These projects, such as the North/West Storm Water project and the Broadway water reservoir expansion, are crucial for preparing the Town for future growth.”

Council approved the operating budget of $35,997,204
