Plans are being made for an accessible and inclusive playground in Lacombe.
A funding request on behalf of the Lacombe Public Schools Enhancement Society was introduced by chairperson Pam Dedora, vice chairperson Renee Spelt, and Team Jigger Representative Jason Lunn during the April 28th council meeting.
During the presentation, the group requested $80,000 in order to help fund the development of the accessible playground as part of the planned replacement of the Ecole James S. McCormick School and Ecole Lacombe Upper Elementary School playground.
Since the request was made, Lacombe City Council has directed Administration to initiate formal discussions with the Wolf Creek School Division Board regarding a potential land exchange, Operation Services Director for the City of Lacombe Doug Halldorson said.
"In this proposed arrangement, the City would contribute $80,000 toward the Lacombe Public Schools Enhancement Society’s inclusive playground replacement project, and an additional $81,000 to support parking lot improvements at École Secondaire Lacombe Composite High School."
"In exchange, the City would acquire a 3.2-acre parcel of school-owned land that borders existing municipal property," he added.
The existing playgrounds at the elementary school have reached the end of their usable life, Halldorson said.
"With over 1,000 students using these facilities, many with accessibility needs, this project will ensure all children have a safe and inclusive space to play. These school playgrounds also serve the broader community year-round, making their replacement a benefit to residents across Lacombe."
Due to regulatory processes tied to school lands and budget timing, the project could take some time to complete, Halldorson said.
"The City will stay actively involved with the Enhancement Society and School Division to coordinate timing and funding commitments. City Council is taking a balanced approach—supporting community well-being while ensuring responsible use of taxpayer funds."
