Nothing trumps community-minded individuals empowering youth and making a difference all while catching some air and having a good time.
Spencer and Karlee Rennie of 5024 General Store in Lacombe stepped up as guest chefs for the month of October, helping to create the 'Mexican Smash' burger, with $2 from every burger sold going to their cause of choice, Cousins Skateboard Community.
Cousins Skateboard Community is a group of friends and allies in southern Alberta using skateboarding to empower youth within indigenous communities. 5024 General Store is a skate shop passionate about community and supporting local youth, offering up free summer skateboard camps for kids, according to a release.
As 5024 co-owner Spencer notes, they understand firsthand how skateboarding builds community and what it brings to youth, and he’s thrilled by what Cousins is doing.
“As a non-profit, Cousins relies completely on donations, partners, or sponsorships to fund their programs and organization which uses skateboarding to empower youth within indigenous communities here in Alberta,” he said.
Last summer alone, Cousins was able to connect with over 1,000 kids in Treaty 7 through their weekly, barrier free skateboard programs.
Thanks to the support of the Burger of the Month program, Spencer and Karlee helped to deliver $882 to the Cousins Skateboard Community.
Thanks to the support for the Burger of the Month program month after month, Cilantro and Chive have had the opportunity to give back more than $174,000 to local charities over the past 93 months.
Meanwhile, the November Burger of the Month in Lacombe location is 'Gayle’s Imperial' created in collaboration with local guest chef Gayle Pickett. Two dollars from every burger sold goes directly to her cause of choice - I.O.D.E Lacombe.
