Big Brothers Big Sisters face busy holiday season

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lacombe & District (BBBS) are enjoying the few days of calm before the Christmas storm.

They will be kicking off the holiday season with Santa Sessions on Nov. 27.

Santa will be in town from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Bamford House in Lacombe, taking photos on the steps of the historical home.

“Families can sign up and get photos of their pets or their loved ones, all proceeds from sessions go towards our core mentoring program,” said Crystal Zens, with BBBS. “It will be a lot of fun. They can see Santa outside which will be a nice addition and they can visit Santa in a more natural environment.”

One of the volunteer Big Sisters will be behind the lense, volunteering her time and skills to take the photos.

They will also be accepting food bank donations on site. To book a Santa Session visit eventbrite.com/e/santa-sessions-tickets-199434081707 .

BBBS will also be unveiling their 2021 Festival of Wreaths collection during the Lacombe’s Light up the Night festival on Nov. 25.

The wreaths, which have been designed and donated by Blackfalds and Lacombe businesses will be on display at the Abbey Centre in Blackfalds and the Lacombe Memorial Centre. Residents will also have the chance to bid on them.

Zens says that the organization is hoping that donations and proceeds from the events they have planned throughout the holiday season will help them continue to build their programs and supports but that an hour a week as an in-school mentor would be the biggest gift to some kids in the community.

With their in-school program starting up again after having to be adjusted due to COVID, they are needing to build their mentor list to continue matching.
