Blackfalds residents will be heading back to the polls in the New Year.

The election onJan. 10, 2022 comes after the resignation of a Councillor. The Town of Blackfalds received two formal complaints by members of the public against the member of Town Council under the Council Code of Conduct Bylaw 1226.18.

These complaints, which were received on Oct. 26 and Nov. 1, were determined to meet the required procedures under the bylaw’s formal complaint process and Council discussed these complaints during the In-Camera portion of the Nov. 9 Regular Council Meeting. The meeting was conducted with the Council member identified in the complaints recusing themselves from the discussion.

Council did conclude that one complaint did not contain grounds warranting further investigation, but that the second complaint justified gathering additional information, as part of an investigation process.

“Once all information is considered, Council will be in a position to determine if the complaint falls within the threshold of requiring a formal investigation against the Councillor in question,” said Myron Thompson, Chief Administrative Officer in a press release on Nov. 15.

The nomination period began on Nov. 10. and any interested parties are to submit their nomination forms in person to the town’s Returning Officer by noon on Dec. 13, 2021.

Advance polls will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 5, and Saturday, Jan. 8 in Council Chambers on the second level of the Civic Cultural Centre.

Election Day will be Monday, Jan. 10, 2022, in Council Chambers from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.
