Enforcement Services would like to remind residents that they are responsible for maintaining the right-of-way next to their property (the area behind their back fence) between the property line and the alley.

A recent inspection has revealed that many properties have tall grass and weeds between the alley and the property line. Under section 7 of the City of Lacombe Nuisance Bylaw, all property owners or renters are required to cut the grass on and maintain any boulevard that abuts or flanks any privately owned, leased or occupied property.

Section 8 of the bylaw states that “no person shall cause or permit or undertake any activity upon any City property which is a nuisance.” Nuisance is defined as any condition, use of or activity upon any property which is untidy, unsightly, offensive, or has/may have a detrimental impact upon any person or property in the neighborhood, or that interferes with the use or enjoyment of other properties.

Penalties for non-compliance with the Nuisance Bylaw begin at $100 for the first offence, and subsequently move up. Non-compliance may result in the City taking corrective action, with the property owner held responsible for cleanup costs.

Bylaw officers regularly conduct neighbourhood patrols to check for unsightly conditions that can create a public safety concern or attract pests. This includes long grass and noxious weeds, improperly stored items, offensive materials or harmful fluids.

If you would like to report a bylaw infraction, please call Enforcement Services at (403)782-1269.
