Dual credit students seeing 100 per cent graduation in WCPS

Oct. 20 board meeting briefs

The Wolf Creek Public Schools (WCPS) board heard a report from administrators with Ponoka Elementary School (PES) regarding the success of a transportation pilot project during their meeting on Oct. 20.

The project aims to remove barriers to attendance many students face by improving access to transportation to school. PES reported greatly improved results, connections and success for students involved in the program.

Dual credit opportunities

The board received a report from Education Services regarding the growth and success of dual credit partnerships with post secondary institutions.

In Wolf Creek, 100 per cent of students involved in a dual credit program graduate high school as they pursue post secondary interests ranging from health sciences, to STEM to education and trades.

Beginning teacher cohort

The first cohort session for beginning teachers will be supported through a number of sessions centered around topics significant to beginning teachers such as: classroom management and culture, assessment, differentiation and working with educational assistants.

Youth Centre expansion to Terrace Ridge School

The board directed the superintendent to enter into a lease agreement with the Ponoka Youth Centre Association at Terrace Ridge School in Lacombe for a period of two years commencing Nov. 1.

Since the opening of youth centre programming at École Lacombe Upper Elementary School in Lacombe there has been significant interest expressed from parents of Terrace Ridge students.

Flashing red light violations

The board heard a report that flashing red light violations (motorists passing school buses while the stop sign is out and red lights are engaged) increased in September.

The first week of school the division recorded a record number of people not stopping for the red flashing bus lights while students were about to disembark or load.

Wolf Creek continues to ask motorists to please stop for buses while the stop sign is out and red lights are engaged.
