Four new Habitat for Humanity homes have been finished in Blackfalds.

On Aug. 10, federal Families, Children and Social Development Minister Ahmed Hussen announced $400,000 will be going to Habitat for Humanity Red Deer in support of the two duplexes.

The money comes through a three-year $32.4 million partnership between Habitat for Humanity Canada under the National Housing Strategy’s National Housing Co-investment Fund.

Four families were officially welcomed to their new homes in a dedication ceremony on Tuesday.

“Every Canadian deserves a safe and affordable place to call home,” said Hussen in a statement. “Our government is dedicated to helping those in need which is why we are pleased to partner with Habitat for Humanity to make a real difference in the lives of families here in Blackfalds and everywhere in Canada.”

Habitat for Humanity Canada president and CEO Julia Deans said, “The impact of the pandemic continues to be acutely felt by families living with low income, pushing homeownership further out of their reach.”

Partnerships, such as that with Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, “ensures that we can address this gap through housing investments that transform people’s futures, strengthen communities and foster resilience and stability.”

Karen Vavrek, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Red Deer, said “Four new Habitat homeowners now have a solid home base: a platform for success at school and work and for upward mobility from one generation to the next.

“Our government partnerships help offset the costs of land and fees, allowing us to build strength, stability, and self-reliance for hard-working families like the four at our Aspen Lakes West community.”

Blackfalds Mayor Richard Poole said “This is the very first Habitat build in Blackfalds and I hope it won’t be the last.”

Habitat for Humanity says it bridges a gap for people who face barriers to owning a home and would not otherwise qualify for a traditional mortgage. With the help of volunteers and donors, Habitat helps families build their own home and pay an affordable mortgage based on their income.
