The Lacombe and District Chamber of Commerce has began to accept applications for this year’s Chamber Scholarship

“Every year, the Chamber has the pleasure of awarding up to two scholarships in the amount of $1,250,” Chamber Executive Director Monica Bartman said. “It is available to students who are attending school anywhere in Lacombe County as long as they are entering full-time post-secondary education in the fall after they graduate.”

The scholarship is an opportunity for the Chamber to give back to the community

“It is a cash scholarship and there isn’t stipulations on what it has to be used for. The eligibility requirement are that either the students work for a Chamber member business or their parents or guardian works for Chamber member business,” Bartman said.

So far, the Chamber has disbursed a total of $17,500 — which has all been funded through donations from the community.

“We budget for it every year in the sense that it is an ongoing expense but the way we fund it is through admissions fees at the Trade Show,” Bartman said. “Anyone that is coming from the community to attend the Trade Show is asked to pay a dollar for admission.

“That money goes exclusively to fund the scholarship. It is important for us to be able to give back to the community in this way.”

Previously, the scholarship had been funded though several other events including the Chamber golf tournament and the raffling off a donated vehicle from the Kinsmen.

While all applications are considered, the Chamber does give preference to potential business students.

“We do like to give a preference to business students when we can, but it is quite broad depending on the candidates in any given year,” Bartman said.

The Chamber, according to Bartman, is proud to be able to provide these scholarships.

“As a non-profit, it is challenging sometimes. We can’t contribute to specific causes or other organizations but this is way, with the help of the community, we are able to give something back to students locally,” she said.

Students can apply on the Chamber website of at info@lacombechamber.ca.
