At their September 13 meeting, Lacombe City Council rescinded the last large batch of inoperative and obsolete historical policies.
The elimination of these policies has been ongoing for the past five years, with 1,024 Bylaws (2017-2018) and 1,142 Policies (2020-2021) removed. The latest round of eliminations includes an additional 140 outdated policies.
“Council is encouraged to see another round of obsolete policies removed from our books,” Mayor Grant Creasey said. “This project streamlines our operations and removes any confusion within our bylaws and policies. Additionally, it eliminates potential red tape for our residents.”
The project was initially given the go-ahead in 2016 to organize and index City bylaws.
Through the process, it was discovered many governing documents were inoperative, obsolete, or expired. In many cases, prior bylaws or policies were not repealed or rescinded when a new or amended governing document was passed.
The process of rescinding bylaws and policies carries no direct costs and is completed using existing municipal staff. The project aligns with Council’s strategic goals to have user-friendly, relevant and accessible Council documents.
