A 74-year-old Lacombe driver was killed in a head-on vehicle collision early on Highway 2A just north of Red Deer early Tuesday morning.
Red Deer RCMP said initial evidence indicates that the driver who died was travelling southbound at about 5 a.m. and crossed over the centre line into the northbound land hitting another vehicle head-on.
Police said it was early in the investigation so early reports into the collision, which occurred between Township Road 391 and Range Road 272, are subject to change.
The two occupants of the vehicle that was struck were taken to hospital where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said the vehicle they were in, a Lincoln MKZ, had been reported stolen during a car jacking on March 7 in Red Deer. A loaded SKS rifle was located in the ditch which had been discarded by the driver after the collision.
RCMP have charged the driver of the Lincoln MKZ, a 44-year-old Red Deer resident, with possession of stolen property over $5,000, possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), and three counts of weapon offences.
He was remanded into custody and was scheduled to appear at the Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer on March 13.
The passenger of the Lincoln MKZ was released without charges.
