If you are looking for a unique way to honour someone in your life, consider taking part in this year’s ‘Lift Someone into the Light’ at St. Andrew’s United Church on Nov. 24.
The concept is simple but powerful – folks can decorate an ornament complete with a special person’s name on it, and hang it on the Christmas tree in front of the church.
This marks the second year for the event, said Susan Hrycan, a member of St. Andrew’s and one of the event’s organizers.
“It really doesn’t matter who it’s for – as long as they have a special place in your life and heart – that is the only criteria.”
The event is held in conjunction with Light up the Night, as it’s a busy evening in the downtown area, she said. “If there is someone who just meant something to you – they can still be alive or not – you can come and put something on an ornament and hang it on the tree.
“And it’s not just for our congregation – it’s for everybody.”
Last year’s inaugural event proved very popular, with about 100 ornaments placed on the tree.
“It was absolutely amazing – we were just blown away.”
The ornaments are also supplied by the church. They stay up until Jan. 7.
The idea for the Lift Someone into the Light came from congregant Anneke Kassies who had discovered a town in Germany that held a similar event.
“It’s a very personal thing.”
Lift Someone into the Light gets underway at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 24. There will also be a fire set up plus hot chocolate.
