At their regular meeting Monday, Council approved the application for a seasonal patio in front of a downtown restaurant, located at 5021 50 Street.

City administration received a request for an on-street patio in front of 5021 50 Street (Cilantro and Chive) to occupy five parking stalls on 50 Street for seasonal use. Staff ensured that adequate notifications of the proposal reached both adjacent landowners and their tenants, which garnered both positive and negative responses.

Although parking spaces would be temporarily reduced, it was Council’s opinion that the location of an outdoor patio would have a net positive effect downtown by drawing more people to the area during the summer months. And by providing bicycle parking in lieu of automobile parking, the restaurant will add an active transportation option to help ease parking concerns in the area.

“This outdoor patio project fits in with Council’s strategic goal of working with Lacombe’s downtown businesses to stimulate the development of this historic area,” said Mayor Grant Creasey.

Council also reviewed an early draft of the On-Street Patio Policy, which will establish an administrative process for the City to review and approve applications for patios on roads and sidewalks between May 1 and October 15.

“We support on street patios because they provide a new way for businesses to attract more residents and visitors to Lacombe, especially to our downtown,” said Jordan Thompson, Director of Operations and Planning. “However, we know the temporary loss of parking is a concern for some businesses and members of the public, so we will use this opportunity to monitor the patios on 50 Street over the summer, before presenting the final policy to Council this fall.”
