The Ponoka RCMP are investigating after a fatal hit and run took place on Sept. 24 in Lacombe County.

Although passersby stopped to aid a motorcyclist who had lost control of his bike and was in the road, an oncoming vehicle hit the man, who died as a result of his injuries.

At about 5:43 a.m., Ponoka RCMP were dispatched to a single motor vehicle collision on Highway 815 just south of Highway 604/Township Road 420 w.

The adult male motorcyclist had been travelling south bound on 815 when he struck a deer. He lost control of the motorcycle and slid on the highway. The driver came to a stop in the middle of the highway and the motorcycle slid into the ditch.

RCMP say “Good Samaritans” stopped and came to the aid of the motorcyclist.

Shortly after that, a northbound vehicle came upon the scene. The northbound vehicle pulled out to pass another northbound vehicle that had pulled over because of the collision.

One of the Good Samaritans that was assisting the motorcyclist jumped out to the way to avoid being struck.

The northbound vehicle then struck the motorcyclist who was still laying on the highway.

The northbound vehicle did not stop and continued northbound on Highway 815.

The motorcyclist did not survive and was pronounced deceased.

The Ponoka RCMP are requesting the public’s assistance in locating the suspect vehicle and identifying the driver.

The suspect vehicle is described as an early 2000 Volkswagen, possibly a Jetta, red in colour.

It also had a rear passenger side (right) burned out tail light.

Ponoka RCMP are asking for anyone with information, or dash camera footage in the area of Highway 815 north or south between Ponoka, and the Joffre plant, as well as on Highway 53, east and west of the Highway 53 turnoff from Highway 815, to please contact Ponoka RCMP at 403-783-4472 or your local police.
