A reckless driver caused plenty of chaos on a section of Aspen Beach during the evening of June 4.
“We were on the beach on Sunday,” said Victor Caicido, a Lacombe resident. “At 7 p.m. someone decided to drive on the beach where a lot of people were having a good time - we had our kids there. Everyone was running to the beach, grabbing their loved ones and this guy was going around 80 to 100 km per hour,” he said.
“It’s like he was racing.”
Unfortunately, no one was able to get the driver’s license plate because everyone was desperate in trying to grab their kids, he said.
“He ended up driving (on top) of where the kids’ playground is, again nearly missing some kids,” he said.
“Eventually, the guy drove off. Obviously, no one went after him in his car because he was going so fast,” said Caicido, adding that the vehicle was a black Dodge Journey.
Police with the Blackfalds detachment were contacted, and so far are still awaiting more witness statements, according to a spokesperson.
He said the beach needs more barriers to prevent vehicle access to these areas.
Meanwhile, Caicido said his family is still working through the impact of the situation.
“It was pretty horrific,” he said. “This guy - there was no stopping him.
“Imagine if he would have hit someone, and they had died?
“He drove on the playground - imagine if there would have been kids there sliding on the slide - he would have hit them,” he said, adding that his family often visits the site.
“We love that beach - it’s close by, too.”
