Rocky Mountain House RCMP and emergency crews respond to injured hiker

Teen rescued by emergency crews near Rocky Mountain House

Clearwater County, Alberta – On October 12, at 12:20 p.m., the Rocky Mountain House RCMP responded to a call for assistance from a lone hiker who had fallen and became lost while hiking Coliseum Mountain near Nordegg, Alberta.

The 17-year-old male was part of a school trip when he left the group to take a short cut. The male veered from the trail and in an area that became steeper, he fell, became lost and made a call for assistance. Rocky Mountain House Search and Rescue (SAR), RCMP, EMS, and Fire services responded. SAR ground searchers located the male and Ahlstrom Air Ltd. assisted with a long line rescue utilizing their Human External Cargo (HEC) system, bringing the male to safety. EMS treated the male on scene for minor injuries.

The RCMP would like to remind the public about the natural hazards in the back country at this time of year. These hazards include issues like changing weather which can include changes in terrain. Hikers are encouraged to hike within their capabilities, dress and be prepared for weather changes, and not take on unnecessary challenges. It is always recommended to hike with a group and stay with your group.
