One local candidate, Tessa Szwagierczak, a professional accountant from Lacombe and is carrying the banner for the AIP and challenging for the Lacombe-Ponoka riding.

With 87 available seats in the legislature, it is possible that the AIP would form the government should nearly all of party’s 63 candidates win their respective ridings.

Szwagierczak, 59, made the decision to get into the race after wanting to do something other than simply sitting back and being ‘concerned for the future’.

”I don’t see any resolving this huge issue of getting our product to market through government bodies refusing to listen to voices of Alberta,” she explained in an e-mail recently.

Over the past four years, through her business, she’s witnessed devastation and failure of both businesses and personal circumstances ranging from single parents unable to support their family to filing of corporate and personal bankruptcy as a business goes down the drain.

“That last point is my personal hardship of watching senior citizens barely surviving on the mere pennies they are faced with to live on. Then, let’s just add salt to the wound by giving them a tax bill on their pension,” she noted.

“This is morally wrong and unacceptable as the senior already facing huge challenges, like not being able to afford their medication or medical aids to get them through their daily life.”

For her, the AIP is a party of the people and that as the MLA she could be the voice for constituents, “as I understand their wants, needs and concerns as I currently assist many on these same issues now through my practice. Those that know me well, know that I get the job done well.”

Szwagierczak added the AIP believes independence and prosperity is the right of all Albertans and the party’s oath of rights and freedoms can truly unite everyone from all walks of life.

“It simply states, ‘We accept all rights and freedoms at no threat, harm or expense to anyone else’s rights and freedoms.’”

She added she is not a politician, but a business owner as well as a concerned citizen and taxpayer.

“In order for an MLA to have a positive effective in this position of the people’s trust, that person needs to be honest and show integrity along with having an open door policy and the ability to listen to everyone’s concerns,” Szwagierczak explained.

“I am a member of society with concerns of how Alberta is being treated and where we stand by way of solvency.”

Referencing the staggering estimated $96 billion in debt the province is heading toward within the next four years, she feels the clean up of the mess should not be left to the following generations.

“I do not directly have experience with municipal and provincial politics. However, what I am experiencing in provincial politics today is absolutely appalling as to the behavior of elected officials,” she said.
