Twenty-one Red Deer Emergency Services (RDES) personnel responded to a fire on Jenner Crescent June 13th that caused severe damage to two homes.
RDES arrived on scene shortly after 7:30 p.m. and found the fire had started between the two homes, but was already reaching the attic of one.
After an investigation, RDES has determined the probable cause of the fire to be child’s fire- play. Total damage to both homes is estimated to be $650,000.
Five people were home at the time of the fire and all escaped without injury thanks to an alert from a neighbour.
Emergency crews responded with four engines, one aerial platform and 21 personnel.
RDES staff will go door-to-door to approximately 100 homes in the neighbourhood June 14th to speak with residents about fire safety as part of the After the Fire safety program.
Red Deer Emergency Services is reminding residents of these important fire safety tips to prevent fires at home:
- Keep barbeques away from siding and deck rails, and never leave a barbeque unattended while cooking.
- Do not store flammable materials near a barbeque or cooking surface.
- Keep children a safe distance from barbeques and fires; at least one metre.
- Always dispose of cigarettes in proper containers, not plant pots which can easily catch fire.
- Check your smoke alarms today; your life may depend on it one day.
