UPDATED:

Sylvan Lake RCMP shot a suspect at the scene of a possible oil field property theft in Eckville.

At approximately 8:15 a.m. on April 6 an RCMP officer responded to a location at 54th Avenue near a strip of businesses on the north side of Eckville.

At the location the officer found four vehicles and found a man who appeared to be asleep in a Ford F250 truck.

The officer also saw a sledgehammer and large can of bear spray on the front seat.

The officer checked the licence plate number, which came back registered to a different vehicle.

The officer then placed out a spike belt before returning to his police vehicle to wait for back up.

While waiting for assistance to arrive a confrontation occurred with the male suspect resulting in the officer firing his service pistol.

The man sustained a single gunshot wound which resulted in serious, but non-life threatening injuries. The officer was uninjured.

He was treated on scene by EMS before being transported and admitted to hospital.

The Ford F250 was stolen from Saskatoon approximately five days earlier. The licence plate on the truck was also stolen.

Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is continuing the investigation.
