Wolf Creek Community Church members are excited to present The Advent Box on Christmas Eve at the Lacombe Performing Arts Centre.

Doors open at 6 p.m. with the production starting at 6:30 p.m. There is no charge to attend.

“We decided years ago that we didn’t want to do a traditional Christmas Eve church service. Because we are a community church, we wanted people to be able to bring their neighbours and friends to come and hear the Christmas story, but not have to come to church,” explained Kevin DeBree, an elder and worship leader at Wolf Creek Community Church.

He’s also in charge of the dramatic aspects of the production.

It’s a tradition that’s been running for several years now, with this year’s event featuring a drama with Christmas carols being sung along the way as the plot unfolds.

“It’s about a grandpa who gets visited by four of his grandchildren, and he’s got an Advent box,” said DeBree, who plays the part of the grandfather.

“The story interweaves through items that are in this box - he goes through memories of past Christmases and he passes these items onto his grandchildren.

“There is something for the whole family in it - they can come and enjoy some humour, and there are also some touching memories that grandpa has, too. There’s a real ‘family’ feel to it, and the Christmas story really comes through,” he said.

DeBree hopes that people leave the service with a different understanding of the Christmas story and the importance of legacy.

“Sometimes there are things we pass along in our families that are pretty important - especially memories of the past that also pertain to the future as well,” he said, adding that the story does also bring forward various aspects of the Advent season including love, joy, hope and peace.
