1925-2020 ~ Joan Doreen Malone (nee Wyman) of Lacombe, Alberta, passed away on May 21, 2020, at the age of 94.
Joan was born in Prescott, Ontario in 1925, she grew up in Montreal, Quebec. She graduated from McGill University in 1946 with a degree Bacteriology. She then moved to Calgary to open the province's first bacteriology laboratory at the Colonel Belcher Hospital.
She married Bud Malone in 1949 and moved to Lacombe where Bud practiced Medicine and they raised their family. She called Lacombe home until her passing.
Joan was predeceased by: her husband, Bud in 2005 after 56 years of marriage; her brother, Peter in 1941; her daughter, Maury in 2018; grandson, Mark in 2017; infant granddaughter, Lindy in 1992.
She is survived by: Son, Peter (Bernice) of Lacombe; son, Brian (Debbie) of Cochrane and their children, Jessie (Peter) of Calgary and Kate (Madison) of Vancouver; daughter, Janet (Jack) Hawkings of Bentley and their daughter, Amy (Grady) of Victoria; son, Paul (Patti) of Red Deer and their children, Scott of Edmonton and Emily of Red Deer; son-in-law, Will Hill of Winnipeg and sons, Patrick and Adam, both of Winnipeg.
During her 70 years as a Lacombe resident, she was an active participant in the growth of the community. She was a member of the Lord Lascellees Chamber of IODE and a longtime member of the Lacombe Art Club, which honored her as the "Feature Artist" at one of its annual art shows some years ago.
She was the oldest active member in the history of the Lacombe Golf and Country Club until mobility issues prevented her from playing the game in her late 80's. She was also known for her love of skiing and was active in the early years of the Medicine Lodge Ski Hill.
To honor her wishes, there will be no funeral service. Her family would like to give its sincere thanks to the staff and management of the Lacombe Lodge for her wonderful care.
