March 20, 1954 to November 12, 2020
It is with great sadness that the family of John (Jack) Hawkings announce his passing on Thursday, November 12th in Lacombe, Alberta. Jack was diagnosed with terminal esophageal cancer in early August, which progressed rapidly. He ended his fight with cancer bravely on Thursday, surrounded by the people he loved most.
Jack grew up in a large, loving family on a farm in the Forshee Valley. In his early twenty's he became a member of the RCMP and worked for several years in the lower mainland of British Columbia. Jack moved back to the Forshee area in the early 80's, where he met and married the love of his life, Jan. Jack and Jan had children on the Hawkings farm, and filled the years with family, friends and animals. Jack was always an animal lover and had a quiet way with horses that felt special to anyone who was lucky enough to see it. He worked various jobs in the oilfield, and always had a foot in the real estate market as well. Jack was an avid marathon runner when he was younger and continued to run his whole life. Before his diagnosis he went for a run every day for over four years, just to prove he could. He did everything to the best of his ability and made a mark on the lives of so many people with his work ethic, determination and resiliency.
Jack is survived by his wife Jan, daughter Amy, and sisters Barb (Ed) Olsen, Linda (Dale) Hatala, and Betty (Pat) McCarron. He was predeceased by his parents, Duke and Helen, infant daughter Lindy, and son Mark. There will be no funeral service, so in lieu of flowers, Jan and Amy would appreciate donations to The Terry Fox Foundation.
