Siegfried 'Fred' Walter

Siegfried "Fred" Walter passed away peacefully after a short illness at the Lacombe Hospital and Care Centre on July 18, 2020.
Fred was born at home in Lissen, East Prussia (now Poland) on April 2, 1938 to Meta (Kalweit) and Fritz Walter and was the youngest of 6 children. The family were refugees during the Second World War and spent many months moving throughout Prussia and Germany and finally settled in Steimbke, Germany. When asked why they settled there, his response was "Well, the war ended so we just stayed".
Fred originally trained as a baker in Germany and spent many years plying his trade in Germany, the Bahamas and in Canada until he shifted his focus and started to work as a cook. He retired from the Banff Centre for Continuing Education as their Sous Chef. During the early years of his retirement, he worked as a seasonal campground attendant for Parks Canada in Banff and enjoyed working with the young employees and meeting all the campers.
Fred was predeceased by his parents and his siblings. He is survived by his wife, Sandy, his son, Gerald Robert Fraser and 3 grandchildren, Alexandria (Joel), Jacob (Sarah), and Nathan. He is survived by his 2 closest nephews, Gordon Walter and Alex (Laurie) Walter and their children and grandchildren in Edmonton. In Germany, Fred has many nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren who he visited every couple of years. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Elfriede Walter in Germany.
After Cremation has taken place an inurnment will be held at a later date.
