With the weather being so unpredictable the younger children are very confused as to which season they are experiencing. They have enough trouble understanding that winter doesn’t technically begin until December, let alone when it feels like spring in November. One little girl asked me how long each season lasted and I told her three months. She looked at me sadly and said. “Miss Mary, I’m sorry but I think you’re wrong. “ I asked her how long she thought the seasons lasted and she said. “Maybe two or three days but I have to get to Grade 1 to make sure I’m right!”

You should have your paper delivered on time to notice that, this evening, November 21, The Friends of the Library are having a book sale from 5-9 p.m. and that there will be author readings from 5-7 p.m. in the library. Come and buy your holiday reading and listen to some excellent local authors as well.

On Friday, November 22 from 1-3 p.m. in the Children’s Program Room of the library I will be reading Christmas Stories for young and old alike. Just drop in and start to get in the holiday spirit. Refreshments will be served. (Kid friendly. Possibly Arrowroot cookies.)

The Friends of the Library will be hosting the next Local History lecture on Thursday, November 28 at 7pm in the LMC. The presentation is titled “Sunnybrook Farm”. This is a free event and refreshments are provided.

The MCMPL Book Club will be meeting on Tuesday, December 3 at 7 p.m. to discuss “Educated: A Memoir” by Tara Westover. We meet in the Read and Relax area of the library on the first Tuesday of every month but please note, if the highways are closed this winter, we will arrange for an alternate date. Please check our website if you are unsure.

On Saturday, December 7 from 10-11 a.m., there will be a Winter Party for ages 3-5 years. We will be listening to winter stories, making crafts and having snacks. Please phone or come in to register.

In the afternoon of December 7, from 1-3pm we will be having a Christmas card-making workshop for ages 6 and older. Please phone or come in to register as space is limited.

On, Wednesday, December 11 at 7pm at Lacombe City Cinemas, the library film series will be screening “Judy”, directed by Rupert Goold. This film will be screening a week earlier than usual because of the Christmas chaos. The year is 1968 and Judy Garland arrives in London to perform for five weeks. It has been thirty years since the Wizard of Oz, and she battles with management, charms musicians and her fans. This film features some of her best known songs and gives insight into “the world’s greatest performer”. This film is rated PG.

Our novel this week is “Girl” by Edna O’Brien. “I was a girl once, but not anymore.” This starts the author’s portrayal of a young woman who is abducted in northeast Nigeria. This is a brutal story of incarceration, horror and hunger, as well as a harrowing escape into the terrors of the jungle. An intensely written novel by an award winning author.

Have a great week.
