The children were talking about how icy it was outside. One little boy showed me how he’d skinned his knee and was amazed that he fell so hard that he was hurt even through his clothes. He looked up me very earnestly and said. “You be very careful Miss Mary, you’re getting old now and you could break your bones.” I thanked him for the warning and he replied. “My mom says that old people don’t get better very fast and I need you to be okay until after Christmas.” I asked why until after Christmas and he said. “Cause I need you to read me some Christmas stories.” It was a case of caring about me but with just a tiny bit of selfishness.

Get ready for the second annual Great Library Christmas Cookie Bake-Off! See our website for rules and regulations for participation. Drop off your cookies at the library on Tuesday, December 10 between 10am and 8pm. Please send between 10-20 cookies per entry. (Maximum 2 entries per person.) You will be assigned an entry number at this time. Judges will taste and score cookies on flavor, texture and appearance. Top three will be awarded prizes. On Wednesday, December 11 from 1-2:30 pm we will be hosting a cookie and tea gathering for the prize presentations. All bakers are welcome.
Don’t forget that the Library Film Series will be screening “Judy” a week earlier due to the Christmas rush. This film is showing on Wednesday, December 11 at 7 p.m. at Lacombe City Cinemas. “Judy” is directed by Rupert Goold and is rated PG. It features some of Judy Garland’s famous songs and depicts her life with its trials and pressures.

On Tuesday, January 7 at 7 p..m in the Read and Relax area of the library, the MCMPL Book Club will be discussing the memoir, “Born a Crime” by Trevor Noah. This is a fascinating story of his life in South Africa. Order the book today and join us for the discussion.

Our book this week is “The Great Pretender: the undercover mission that changed our understanding of madness” by Susannah Cahalan. A fascinating book into the definition and treatments of mental illness. Perhaps not a Christmas read but worth a look in the New Year.
